Four dust-collector faults an inspection writes up

An inspection is on the elevator and the collector is the machine they will ask about. These four faults are the sentences in 29 CFR 1910.272. The hire for a failed collector is the [diagnostic on the rule page](/service).

Ranked by how directly the sentence names the collector, then by the dust the collector is supposed to keep off the floor. The text is 1910.272, accessed 8 October 2026.1 The Convent gallery is the local picture of an enclosed belt run, from the NTSB report, not a substitute for the gauge.2 Parish detail sits on the St. James note.

RankFaultParagraphWhat the inspector can see
1No pressure-drop device on a fabric collector(l)(1)The gauge is missing or blank
2Post-30 March 1988 collector in the wrong place(l)(2)Inside, without suppression or a one-hour exterior room
3Priority dust over 1/8 inch(j)(2)Floor within 35 feet of an inside leg
4Collector left below design efficiency(m)(2)The system is known to be down and still running

Why the inspection hits them in this order

  1. The gauge is first because (l)(1) is binary. Every fabric collector on a pneumatic system has a device that indicates pressure drop across the filter. No device, no argument about how clean the floor looks.
  2. Location is second and only for collectors installed after 30 March 1988. Outside, or an explosion-suppression area, or a one-hour separation on an exterior wall with a vent and duct that resist deflagration rupture. If you cannot date the collector, say so. Do not invent the install date.
  3. The 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) layer is third. Priority areas include floors within 35 feet of inside bucket elevators, floors of enclosed grinding rooms, and floors of enclosed dryer areas inside the facility. Immediate removal, or a written program that really is equivalent.
  4. Design efficiency is fourth because it is a maintenance duty, not a hardware spec. (m)(2) says correct a malfunctioning or under-performing dust system promptly. The certification record in (m)(3) is how you show the inspection happened: date, name, equipment identifier.

Compressed air used to blow dust is allowed only when ignition-source machinery in the area is shut down and other known ignition sources are controlled. That is (j)(3). It is a method limit, not a fifth collector fault, and it is how crews make rank 3 worse. The NTSB description of Zen-Noh’s enclosed runways explains why a gallery can hold dust even when the towers look open from the ship. It does not waive (l)(1). No penalty dollar is copied here, because the standard’s paragraph is not the year’s penalty table. Verify any citation amount on the citation. The Port Allen bank check matters if the address you were given is the wrong side of the river.

Questions an inspection actually produces

Does a clean floor cure a missing gauge?

No. Housekeeping and the monitor are different paragraphs. You can be under 1/8 inch and still fail (l)(1). You can have a perfect gauge and still fail (j)(2) on the floor by the leg. Fix the one the inspector is pointing at, then check the other.

What if the collector was installed before 30 March 1988?

(l)(2)’s location rules are for collectors installed after that date. (l)(1)’s monitor is not limited to new collectors. A pre-1988 collector without a pressure-drop device is still a rank 1 fault. Do not use age to skip the gauge.

Is oil mist on this list?

No. These four faults are the fabric-collector and priority-dust sentences. An oil-mist system is not described in the Port Allen elevator page, and it is not a fifth rank here. If you use oil, bring that sheet from the manufacturer. This list will not invent nozzle pressures.

Where is the hire if rank 1 or rank 4 is already true?

The rule page. This list is the order of faults, not a second offer. The callback refuses a house and the states this desk does not cover. A refused job does not send.

If the collector is the machine and the elevator is in Louisiana, the next step is the diagnostic on the rule page.
